How to Live a More Waste Free Life

I've gotten together with Biome Store to bring you a post about how to live a more waste free life. Biome Store is an amazing company that brings you the best solutions for a zero waste and cruelty free lifestyle. They also recently hosted #plasticfreejuly and I'm here to inspire you to continue living this way longer than just July.

It's not easy to live plastic or waste free in today's world. Even the smallest things come packaged and most times we aren't even thinking about the amount of waste that we are creating. I'm not perfect and neither are you, but we can still try to reduce the footprint that we create on this earth.

I've listed five easy steps to reduce your everyday waste below. We can all do these things!

  1. Bring your own shopping bag and avoid single use plastic bags. Canvas bags and picnic baskets are perfect for this.

  2. Buy your kitchen staples in bulk when possible, this way you avoid extra packaging and can fill up your own glass jars instead.

  3. Pack leftover food in glass containers and avoid using things such as cling wrap and foil.

  4. Don't buy plastic bottles, instead look into getting a water bottle made out of glass or metal that you can bring out and about with you.

  5. Avoid takeaway as much as you can as this creates a lot of waste, sit down and enjoy your meal instead.

+ When you create waste make sure you recycle as much as possible. Laziness isn't an excuse.

In today's post I'll be focusing a little more on how to ditch single use takeaway containers such as coffee cups. With a little bit of extra time and effort takeaway lunches will be a distant memory. Let's take a closer look at a few things I picked out from Biome Stores.

Bento Box

Firstly ditch the takeaway boxes and invest in a good lunch box, like this bento box from LunchBots. Link here. When you have a nice and sleek lunch box to bring with you I bet you'll be inspired to use it too. I think this one is perfect for both school and work!

What could you make for lunch then? Here's and easy option that will always taste good.

Mexican Avocado Toast

vegan

2 slices of bread

1 avocado

juice of half a lime

chili flakes

fresh coriander

cherry tomatoes

  1. Grab your favourite bread and toast it slighlty (this way the toast won't get soggy during the day).

  2. Slice the avocado thinly and place the thinn slices on top of your toast.

  3. Squeeze lime all over the avocado to stop it from going brown and addig a fresh flavour!

  4. Then sprinkle with chilli flakes and fresh coriander.

  5. Also add a few pieces of fresh cherry tomatoes.

Are you ready to get lunching? I can't wait to share more bento box recipes with you later this Autumn.

Keep Cup

Takeaway coffee cups are one of the most wasteful things on this planet. Make the planet a favour and ditch them too - for good! Get your hands on a KeepCup. I guarantee it's life changing once you actually start using it. Link here. Most cafes give you a discount if you bring in your own cup and it's also perfect to make your very own hot drinks in.

What else than coffee could you carry around in your KeepCup? I reckon this hot chocolate recipe is a winner.

Chilli Hot Chocolate

vegan

1 tsp raw cacao

1 tsp coconut sugar

1/4 tsp cinnamon

1/4 tsp chiliflakes

1/4 tsp cardamom

pinch of vanilla

3/4 cup coconut milk

  1. Add a splash of water in a pot. Bring it to boil and add in the cacao, sugar and spices. This way you don't end up with any lumps.

  2. Turn down the heat slightly and add in the oat milk.

  3. Stir well until the hot chocolate is warm enough for your liking.

Spice it up and save the planet one drink at a time.

Mason Jar

Last but not least I'd like to share a very useful classic with you - the Mason jar. Link here. It's such a useful thing to have in your kitchen cupboard. You can for example store dry goods in it such as pasta, granola and other grains (great for bulk shopping). You can also make takeaway lunches such as salads in it. My favourite way to use it is probably for large smoothies at home or to go. I believe that you could even bring it with you to your local smoothie bar and ask them to make you a smoothie in it.

  2. Add enough coconut milk for a preferred consistency.

  3. Blend until smooth.

I hope you got some inspiration from this post to at least do some small changes in your life towards a more waste free life. Your actions matter even though you might not think so. Now grab your nearest jar and make a smoothie.
