Kinder Living with In The Soulshine Founder Tanya
I'm so excited for today's post and I know you guys will love it too. I had the honour to do a little interview with Tanya Camilleri - the founder of the vegan fashion brand In The Soulshine. We talk veganism, ethical fashion and Bali life.
Tanya is a true girl boss and a game changer. She shows the rest of us how it should be done. She runs her own company that not only shares a very important message, but also treats all the workers right. I wish there were more business owners like Tanya out there, because if there were I think the world would be a much kinder and better place in so many ways.
If you'd like to know more about Tanya and In the Soulshine you can find all social media links at the end of this post. But before you scroll all the way down make sure you read the whole interview.
Hi Tanya, thank you so much for taking some time out for this little interview. Would you like to start by telling us a little bit about yourself and your vegan journey?
Hi Ida! You’re welcome, thank you for having me. Sure, I’m 28 and living in Bali. I’m half Balinese half Australian and a mama to two beautiful boys Benji and Koa. My vegan journey began when I was 18 years old, I bought a book called ‘Skinny Bitch’ it was the first time I ever thought where my food was really coming from. I became a vegetarian then a few years later I became friends with James Aspey who inspired me to make one of the best decisions of my life... to go vegan.
You are the creator and founder of the vegan clothing brand In The Soulshine. How did it all start? Was it just a small side project or did you have a bigger vision from the beginning? Would love to hear your story.
Like all vegans when I first went vegan I became so passionate. I wanted to do more. I thought of my strengths and other passions, the one I thought of was design and fashion. At the same time I also wanted to wear the vegan message but couldn’t find any tee’s that I loved so I decided to design my own. I never had a bigger vision for my designs. I just made them for fun and thought if I can’t find any tee’s that I love, maybe there are more people out there like me. Turns out there were!
What does the name In The Soulshine stand for?
Living a life and doing things that make your soul shine, that fill you up with joy and love which I feel being vegan does for many people.
All of the clothes are made in Bali and you seem to take such good care of your workers. What are the most important things to keep in mind when running a ethical and vegan fashion brand?
The most important things we keep in mind with the production of our clothing is that our workers are treated fairly, have great working conditions and are paid above the average wage. Basically treat them the way we would want to be treated if we were in their shoes.
You recently DID a small collaboration together with PETA. The top you created for this collaboration is such a good way to start the conversation about vegan fashion. How did this collaboration particular collaboration unfold? Will we see more cool collaborations like this one in the future?
I really enjoyed designing this tee! PETA first approached us with an idea for a tee that promotes Vegan Fashion. They asked if I wanted to work together with them to design it and that’s how our collaboration came about. Yes we’re working on a new collaboration at the moment. It will be a pin that says ‘Young, Wild + Cruelty Free’.
You make spreading the vegan message so much fun. I love all of the clever quotes and designs. Is there any specific quote or style that has become a clear favourite amongst your customers?
Thank you so much! I think Vegan Vibes, Eat Veggies Not Animals and Eat Fruit Not Friends are very much the favourites.
You and your family recently moved to Bali after living in Australia. Sounds like the dream to me! Would you like to share some of your favourite cafes, shops and hidden gems in your local area?
Yes we are loving Bali! My faves would be Peloton Supershop and Kynd Community, they are both vegan cafes and I loooove all the vegan food at both places! Peloton have started doing vegan hot dogs and Kynd have just started doing the first vegan donuts in Bali!
Veganism is so much more than how we eat and dress. In what other ways do you try to live a kind and cruelty free life?
Another way is rescuing dogs. We recently rescued 2 dogs. There are so many stray dogs in Bali in need of homes and love. They have brought so much happiness to our lives. We are so in love with them!
Name three things that you couldn’t live without.
The ocean/nature, mangoes, vegan cheese.
Last but not least I want to say that you’re such an inspiring woman and that I love what you do. What inspires you and are there any specific vegan women out there that inspire you?
Aww thank you, your kind words mean so much. What inspires me the most are people who are helping others out of suffering. People who are promoting and spreading awareness about injustices and doing good in the world. There are many vegan women who inspire me but if I had to choose a few it would be Amanda (@raw_manda), Ellen Fisher (@ellenfisher), Tia Blanco (@tiablanco) and Bonny Rebecca (@bonnyrebecca).
