Kitchen Stories with Cailin from @caiirose

Let me introduce you to Cailin if you're not already familiar with her and her beautiful kitchen creations. From the minute I laid my eyes on this girls food photography I was blown away. 

Not only is Cailin incredibly talented in the kitchen and with her photography, she's also one of the kindest souls in the Instagram community always lifting up others. To me her personality just takes her talent to the next level.

Sadly I missed Cailin with only one day - just as I left Bali she arrived on the beautiful island. I feel very good about leaving Bali in her hands.

Now let's give it over to Cailin. 


Hi Cailin, tell us a little bit about yourself. 

Thanks so much for inviting me over to your blog for this interview. I’m a 23 years young Aussie- Belgian, trying to live my dream life. From a young age I knew I would not stay in one place forever. I studied Arabic and lived in Morocco for a year. Traveling has opened my eyes and showed me so much beauty in this world. After struggling to find my own path, I started to live more in the moment and discovered a healthy plant based lifestyle. Right now I’m wandering around (currently in Bali) combining my passions for healthy living, plant-based food and photography.

Makes me happy: the sea, mountain walks, picnics with friends, cycling, dancing with my eyes closed, talking about life for hours and hours, my family, smoothie bowls, people who are as excited about food as me, hugs, essential oil, exploring new places, trying new food, sunsets, giving people gifts, …. and definitely all the connections and people I meet through social media. 

You have a very beautiful Instagram where you share your incredible food photos. When and how did you get into cooking? How about plant based foods?

Thanks so much Ida! I discovered the vegan lifestyle about one year ago and my love for cooking has just started to grow since. My parents have always been very experimental in their cooking and we ate mainly vegetarian. I often helped them cook, but I was especially known by friends and family for my cakes and sweets. When I started to eat plant based I discovered so many new ingredients and cooking techniques. I love to experiment and try new things (I’m the worst at following recipes exactly) I worked as a chef in a cafe where we got to choose a new menu every single day and I learnt a lot there. Coming up with healthy plant based recipes and photographing them has become something I love. (I may like eating delicious food even more though haha) 

Name three must haves in your kitchen. 

Definitely spices and fresh herbs. That can count for one thing right? I can enjoy very simple meals, but I love dishes with lots of different flavours. Cardamom & coriander are probably my favourite. Secondly I can’t live without fruits. Ok I know I’m not being very specific here, but choosing is one of my difficulties! I love bananas though! And the third would be superfoods. I love adding maca, chia seeds, spirulina, cacao and lots others to my breakfast bowls and smoothies. Oh and for a non-food things, definitely a good blender.

Breakfast, lunch or dinner? Why?

That’s an easy question! Breakfast for sure. You can have anything for breakfast, sweet or savoury. I love smoothies, smoothie bowls, chia pudding, granola, avocado toasts, tofu scrambles, pancakes,…

Would you like to share your favourite breakfast recipe? 

Yes sure, how about these sweet potato pancakes? I love making pancakes at least once a week and always try out some new recipe

Sweet Potato Pancakes

with Peanut Butter Cream


1 cup buckwheat flour

0.5 cup sweet potato puree

1 tsp baking powder

1 tbsp coconut sugar

1 flax egg

1.5 cups plant based milk

1 tsp cinnamon

sniff salt

(good for 5 thick medium size pancakes)


Peanut Butter Cream

0.5 cup soaked cashews

0.5 cup sweet potato puree

1 tbsp peanut butter

1 tsp cinnamon

0.5 cup plant based milk

2 tbsp agave

lemon juice (optional)



  1. Prepare flax egg.

  2. Mix all dry ingredients and wet separately.

  3. Then mix together, but don't over mix.

  4. Bake on medium heat, turn when bubbles form.

Peanut Butter Cream

  1. Mix everything in powerful blender until smooth. ( If you have time, put in freezer for 15min and mix again. Repeat this step if you want a thicker cream)

I also topped my pancakes stack with banana, frozen blueberries & walnuts.


What would your perfect food day look like?

Ohh the perfect food day… I would wake up early and start my day with a green smoothie or acai bowl. Then I would love to meet up with friends and have a pot luck at the beach or in a park. I love get togethers where everyone brings their own food along, then you get to try a bit of everything. I would probably prepare some healthy cookies and a sweet potato quinoa salad. For an afternoon snack we would go to a cute organic cafe and have a matcha or chai latte and some raw treat or vegan ice cream. For dinner I’d either love to eat out or cook at home with friends. Maybe pizza or Indian? I love curries! For me the most important thing is sharing my passion for food with others. Would you like to join me??

You live in Antwerp, Belgium. Do you have any places, shops, cafes (anything really) you would like your foodie friends to know about?

Antwerp is not the most vegan friendly city. It’s still pretty unknown and many people think I only eat carrots, lettuce and cucumbers haha. But it’s slowly changing. I actually don’t eat out often, because I worked in a cafe myself where we also serve vegan food. But there are a couple of places I would recommend checking out when you’re in Antwerp: Falafel Tof: super yummy falafel sandwiches with tahini sauce and you can pick your own veggies. Wild Project: very cute restaurant where you can have delicious vegan pancakes! Divers: a new smoothie bowl place in a fancy street with some cool shops to check out. Robuust: a small zero waste shop I wish was a bit closer to where I live. Think Twice: these second hand clothes stores are where I usually buy my clothes. We all have a sweet tooth, don’t we? What do you prefer to have when you need that sweet kick? Feel free to share a recipe as well.

I definitely love my sweets! I love making raw treats like bliss balls or energy bars. Something chocolatey like avocado chocolate mousse or home made vegan ‘nutella' is also a favourite. Or what I’ve been preparing a lot lately is chia pudding parfaits. I just prepare my chia pudding before I go to bed and add whatever flavour I feel like in the morning. 

Golden turmeric chia pudding


1/4 cup chia seeds

1 cup almond milk

0.5 mashed banana

1 tbsp cashew butter

0.5 tsp numeric

0.5 tsp cardamon

0.5 tsp ginger powder (or fresh is even better)

1/4 tsp rose water


Prepare the night before: mix everything together in a jar. And enjoy in the morning topped with some coconut yoghurt, home made granola, banana and raspberries. You can also add all the favouring in the morning if you have prepared a plain chia pudding at night.


Besides food, you seem to love to travel. What are your best plant based destinations? Any happy food memories from your travels?

Traveling is amazing. I’ve met lovely people, eaten the best food, seen amazing traditions and beautiful nature. So far my best plant based destinations are Bali, New York City and Berlin. I’ve literally eaten my way around these places! I have to say Ubud, Bali is my number one! The food keeps amazing me! It’s all so fresh, healthy and organic. I’m in Bali at the moment and hope I can keep traveling for a while. I would love to see more of Asia and visit my family in Melbourne.

You’re such an talented and inspiring young woman. Where do you get your own inspiration from? Any particular foodies out there that inspire you?

Oh thanks, it means a lot to hear that! David and Luise from The Green Kitchen Stories were actually the first that really inspired me to dive into the healthy food world and food photography. I love their recipes and beautiful vibrant photography. But actually the whole Instagram community has really kept inspiring and motivating me. There are so many talented and supportive people out there. I’ve met up with a few people who I got to know through Instagram and I feel like they have all become real friends. I’m so happy I discovered this community and hope I can inspire lots of people to join me on this healthy lifestyle journey. I’m also very fortunate to have a cousin who has been my ‘mentor’ and keeps motivating me to live my dream life.
